In light of the upcoming World Poetry Day, here are three female poets to discover, according to Persephone Books
By Marta Michnik
Judith Viorst
American poet and novelist, known for her humorous observational poetry. Her poems about ageing are an insightful story of a woman's life, with Viorst chronicling her experiences from her twenties to eighties. Inspired mostly by her marriage and motherhood, her work is relatable and funny, which makes it accessible to people who do not usually read poetry.
Susan Miles
Susan Miles was the pen name of an English writer Ursula Roberts. As Roberts, she published a pamphlet The Cause of Purity and Women's Suffrage (1912), whereas her poetry and novels were published under her pseudonym. She is arguably most known for the novel in verse Lettice Delmer (1958). She was praised in Harold Monro's Some Contemporary Poets, as "one of the 50 most important poets".
Virginia Graham
English writer, poet and critic. Most of her work was inspired by the experience of World War II, such as Consider the Years (1938-1946) and The Story of WVS (Women's Voluntary Services). Her work is said to "convey irony, wisdom, humour, realism and a superb eye for detail". She was lifelong friends with the singer Joyce Grenfell. Their correspondence was published in Joyce & Ginnie: the letters of Joyce Grenfell & Virginia Graham.
